Nicole Martel

Born the last of eleven children in Quebec City to parents who had emigrated from Paris, Miss Martel was nearly kicked out of Catholic school when at 14 she lied about her age to join a can-can troupe, and a news photo caught her in costume, one black-meshed leg elevated to a height that made for some very unhappy nuns. She turned down an offer as lead singer for the Follies Bergere at the Tropicana in Las Vegas to sing with Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, and Harry Field, anbd has now settled into a career in jazz. her engaging alto has been described as reminiscent of a "more animated" Marlene Dietrich, and she sings in both French and English. She is preparing for an engagement in January 2000 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas.
